BLACK FOUNTAIN

Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan, 2012

Black Fountain shoots up black liquid that collapses into a surrounding pool. The intention was to create an image and metaphor to express the violence of war and various world issues including the economy, and the constant international situation regarding oil. During the Gulf War in 1991, when a small drizzle began to fall, I looked up and saw that the rain was black. I was shocked. I realized that the black rain was acidic and had splashed on me. The black rain continued for three days and covered an area of over a thousand square kilometres.
